Antelope Slot Canyon

Antelope Slot Canyon is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. The way the light bounces off every curve in the canyon revealing the long narrow path you’re heading down is really exciting and sometimes even a bit terrifying. It’s definitely not a place for someone who is claustrophobic.

I arrived at Lower Antelope Slot Canyon around 7:00 a.m. hoping to beat the crowds and catch the light as it passed through the canyon. I was there early and first in line, unfortunately they don’t open until 9:00 a.m. Once they did open I paid an additional fee for a photographers pass that allowed me four hours in the canyon on my own without a guide. Lower Antelope Canyon doesn’t draw as many sightseers as the upper canyon due to the difficult hiking and climbing which meant I wouldn’t need to worry about other people getting in the way of my shooting. For the first couple of hours the canyon was entirely my playground. I did encounter one other photographer and later a couple of tour groups passed me by but that was all. By 12:45 p.m. I had reached the end of the canyon so I packed up my gear and headed back knowing that this day I had seen something truly amazing — something I would never forget.

Tulips are in bloom

Tulips are in bloom in April and I wanted to capture the morning sunlight as it rose over the tulip field so I packed my gear and hit the road.

It’s about 4:00 a.m. and sunrise is at 6:30, I have approximately 40 miles to drive and even though I’m not sure exactly where this place is I should have plenty of time to get there and setup. I start heading south on I-5 and after a few miles I run into my first obstacle, I-5 south is closed up ahead. The detour goes through downtown Portland and that adds 15 minutes to the trip. I take the off-ramp and to my surprise the bridge I was getting ready to cross goes up. That’s going to add another 15 minutes. Now I’m starting to rethink this and wonder if I should just head back home and go back to bed. As I’m waiting for the bridge to open back up I do the math and figure that I will arrive by 5:30 so I decide to power on.

At roughly 5:40 a.m. I arrive, grab my gear and start looking for a few places to photograph. With all the varieties and colors to choose from I know my work is cut out for me. For the next hour I move from one location to another taking advantage of the light. I made the right choice this morning. It was a beautiful morning and the sunrise over the tulips was incredible.

Revisiting the Carousel at Jantzen Beach

Back in October I wrote about taking photographs of the carousel at the Jantzen Beach Center. I recently went back to the carousel for a few more photos. This time my goal was to capture the beauty of the carousel in motion. The first step was to find a few places that had enough room for me to move around with my equipment. Next I needed to make sure I wasn’t going to be tossed from it once it started turning. I was told the top speed of the carousel was about ten miles per hour which doesn’t seem that fast until you’re trying to stand-up and take pictures.

This may be the last opportunity I have to photograph the carousel for some time. EDENS the owners of Jantzen Beach announced that the carousel would be closing for restoration on April 22, 2012.

The beauty of Bumpass Hell

Lassen Volcanic National Park located near Redding in Northern California is an incredible place to visit. While driving through the park you will see some incredible views of the meadows, mountains and various lakes but if you’re willing to do a bit of hiking you will see so much more. Bumpass Hell was one of my favorite places we hiked to. Once you get there you are rewarded with a spectacular view of the active boiling mud pots and hot springs in a world of vibrant colors.

Graffiti and Reflections in an Abandoned Building

One of my favorite things to photograph is graffiti art. It can have so much texture, color and style to it. I do believe it can be beautiful in the correct setting. When I set out to shoot inside this abandoned building my original thought was that I would try to capture the graffiti with some of the amazing clouds in the sky that night. Once I started walking around that all changed. I noticed all the incredible reflections coming from the water that had pooled around the floor which added yet another dimension. I was still able to capture the clouds but the reflections became my main focus.

Anticipating the sunrise

I woke early and headed out to the Columbia River Gorge anticipating photographing the sunrise over Mount Hood. Unfortunately the dreary grey clouds didn’t break, the amazing sunrise never happened and I was left trying to decide whether to head back home empty handed or find a new subject to photograph.

From the Historic Columbia River Highway I could see wonderful reflections in the wetlands nearby so I grabbed my gear and set off through dense thickets of thorny blackberry bushes carrying my equipment and all the while trying not to slip on the wet, moss covered rocks.

Even though I ended up with a number of scrapes and cuts and the sunrise I originally went out to photograph never materialized it was a great morning.

Portland Google+ Photowalk

Three very creative and fun guys: Brian Matiash, Jeffrey Yen and Ben Latterell organized the first ever “Portland Google+ Photowalk” (if you’re on Google+ search for #PDXPhotowalk).

Union Station in downtown Portland was the starting point for a casual stroll through Chinatown then over the Burnside Bridge and ending at Hair of the Dog Brewing for food & drinks.

One of the things I find most interesting about these events is what people choose to photograph. There are a number of places and things I walked right past not giving them a second glance but others saw something, stopped and composed a shot. After checking out some of their photos later on Google+ I’m inspired to go back and see what I missed the first time around.

Eastman Kodak files for bankruptcy

Eastman Kodak files for bankruptcy. I have been reading about Kodak and their financial troubles for the past couple of years, yet it still came as a surprise when I read the news this morning about their filing. Kodak was once the dominant company in the photo film industry, it was the film everyone used. Times have changed and unfortunately Kodak didn’t, or it did but not soon enough.

Most people just don’t use film cameras any longer and that’s not likely to change. It seems a little ironic that after reading the news I pulled out my old SLR film camera and some rolls of film and photographed them with my Digital SLR camera…

Vista House at Crown Point

Vista House at Crown Point is about 30 miles from Portland on the Historic Columbia River Highway (U.S. Route 30). On a clear day you have an incredible view of the Columbia River Gorge and some of the Cascade Mountains. I arrived late in the day just as the sun was setting, the lighting and clouds where both perfect. The best part was that almost everyone had left leaving me with an unobstructed view of Vista House.

United States National Bank

United States National Bank located in downtown Portland has some of the most stunning doors I’ve ever come across. The attention to detail on the doors is truly remarkable. Eerie walk through Wilshire Park

It was somewhat eerie walking through Wilshire Park this morning, quiet and empty with the fog lingering around. The absolute silence here this morning is not what I’m used. Any other morning the place is bustling with activities, runners, people walking their dogs or working out but this morning I had the entire place all to myself…it was both eerie and peaceful at the same time.

What to do with photos of hotel neon signs?

What can I do with photos of hotel and motel neon signs? I love these old neon signs with so much character and always think they’d look great in a photo but when I return home and revisit them for the most part I end up finding these photos boring and I have no idea what to do with them. Today that all changes with the help of Adobe Photoshop and the add-on Color Efex 3.0 Pro by NIK Software. Today I’m going to create a textured vintage looking postcard with this photo.

Here are the steps I used to create this images

First I opened up the image in Photoshop and cleaned up of any sensor dust spots using the [Spot Healing Brush Tool].

Note: To preserve the original image a trick I like to use is to create a new layer for the edits I’m going to make. To do this, first I create a new layer. Then while in the new layer, I select the [Spot Healing Brush Tool] and change “Type” to Content-Aware and Sample all layers. Then I do all of my cleanup in the new layer with the [Spot Healing Brush Tool]. When I’m finished I “Merge Visible” layers.

Then I took the image into Color Efex 3.0 Pro’s “Tonal Contrast” filter to give the neon sign a little more contrast. Since I only wanted to influence the contrast on the Thunderbird Lodge sign and I didn’t want the sky or buildings to change, I added a few control points with a 0% opacity to the sky and buildings below.

I could have been a bit more accurate on which portion of the image was going to be affected by clicking on the [Brush] button and painting on only the areas I wanted contrast applied to but for this project it wasn’t necessary and I was happy with the preview using just the control points so I hit [OK].

Note: One of the nice things about Color Efex is that it creates a new layer every time you apply a filter making it easy to undo if you don’t like the results

Next I ran it through Color Efex 3.0 Pro’s “Cross Processing” filter giving the image more aged colors and a little more color contrast. After playing with different settings, I found that I liked Y02 with a strength of 65%.

In this step I used Efex 3.0 Pro’s “Polaroid Transfer” filter to give the image some imperfections and a rough border.

Here are the settings I used:
· Border: 62%
· Outer Color: 37%
· Saturation: 34%
· Smear: 0%
· Tear Off: 0%

Next I made some adjustments to both the colors & brightness of the image using Photoshop’s “Adjustment” tool and I adjusted the “Levels” and “Curves”.

Since the adjustments are in their own layers I was able to make small tweaks to them before moving on to the next step.

I wanted to add some contrast to the background so I went back in to Color Efex 3.0 Pro’s “Tonal Contrast”. Then using Photoshop’s [Quick Select Tool] I highlighted only the neon sign and then clicked on the [Add Vector Mask] button to created a mask for the layer.

Since I had the Thunderbird Lodge sign highlighted when the mask was created the sky was hidden not the sign. I inverted the mask using the [Command+I] keys, this exposed the sky and hid the sign. I then changed the layer style by going to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options and selecting “Soft Light” with opacity set to 70%.

I wanted to add some texture to the image to give it a weathered look so I placed a gray scale image of a flattened crumpled sheet of paper in a new layer. To do this I went to File > Place and selected the image I wanted to use for the texture, then I sized and positioned it, hit “enter” on the keyboard to apply the changes. I then rasterized the layer by going to Layer > Rasterize > Smart Object.

I wanted to apply a different level of texture to the background so I copied the mask layer I just created in the previous step (Add color contrast step) by clicking on the mask layer and holding down the ‘ALT’ key and dragging the mask layer to the crumpled paper layer. This should hide the area where the neon sign is. Finally I changed the layer style blending option to “Multiply” and set opacity to 40%.

Next I duplicated the layer I just created (Add texture step) using the [Command+J] shortcut. With this layer I want to add texture to the neon sign and not the background. Since I duplicated the layer the mask layer was also copied. Again using the [Command+I] shortcut on the mask layer I inverted the mask exposing the sign area. I left the Layer style blending option set to “Multiply” and changed opacity to 20% to apply less texture to the sign area.

I wanted to sharpen up the image a bit so I duplicated the “Polaroid Transfer” layer and moved it to the top layer. Next I changed the new layers blending option to “Soft Light” at 100% opacity. Finally I used Photoshop’s “High Pass Filter” with a setting of Radius 3.9 pixels.

I wasn’t completely satisfied with the colors so I made a few more tweaks using Photoshop’s “Adjustment” tool by adjusting “Levels”, “Curves” and “Hue/Saturation” .

I saved the image in Photoshop’s .PSD format with all the layers in case I wanted to make changes. Then I flattened all the layers and saved the image in both a high-res .Tif format for my printing needs and a .jpeg for any web use.

A one street town

Driving north on Hwy 62 towards Crater Lake one of the small towns I went through was Fort Klamath. There’s not much in Fort Klamath as far as I could tell. It’s a one street town that time has forgotten, the place looked deserted.

One of the abandoned buildings did catch my attention but I kept on driving. A few minutes later I still couldn’t shake the image of the tattered curtain blowing through the broken windowpane. I knew that if I didn’t turn around right then the opportunity to capture the image would be lost forever. So I started heading back to town…

The building was totally abandoned and full of cardboard, trash and old furniture. It did have a no trespassing sign up so I’m guessing I wasn’t the first person to notice the place. I had no desire to go inside, I was perfectly content standing outside capturing this moment in time.

After I finished taking photos of the building that brought me back to this town I spotted the gas station a cross the street that was in disrepair.

I found myself wondering what happened to these places, what made people stop coming here, did the owners just pack up and walk away, or is it that they just couldn’t survive during the economic downturn in such a seasonal location.

365 Days Later

On October 25th, 2010 I began Project 365. It was a simple concept: post one photo per day for one year using my iPhone and the Hipstamatic photo app. Three hundred sixty five days later I’m at the end of my journey and ready to move on. Below are some of my thoughts on the project.

How difficult can it be to post one photo a day?

When I started Project 365 that was the question I asked myself. For the first few months it wasn’t very demanding and it was a great little creative outlet. I just photographed random things that I’d come across throughout my day and post them. I felt I had a handle on it and didn’t foresee any problems….I can do this, no big deal, right?

The challenge was in not repeating myself. On any normal week I would see the same things day in and day out. After a while I started questioning every shot. Did I or didn’t I take a photo of that last week? I soon realized it didn’t really matter. I could just select another lens and film from the app and the photo would look completely different. One problem surfaced when I was traveled without a WIFI connection and my phone didn’t have a signal. This may not seem like a big deal but I was committed to posting one photo each day so in those instances when I didn’t have a signal my solution was to find places that had free or no security WIFI to post my photo.

Would I do it again?

I don’t know at this point. I did find it to be a greater commitment than I thought it would be and the last month of Project 365 was probably the most difficult. By then I was indeed ready to be done and move on. I’m pleased with the results and the fact that I accomplished what I set out to do but I’m not ready to sign up for another 365 days.

Occupy Portland – How long will this last?

Two weeks after the big Occupy Portland demonstration there are still a few hundred people camping in Lownsdale Square and Chapman Square, two small parks that are wedged between government offices in downtown Portland. This is just a small fraction compared to the thousands of people that marched in Portland on October the 6^th, but the signs and the message are still the same, the corruption, disparity and greed needs to end.

Tents fill almost every grassy inch of the park making for some very close accommodations. Even with the absences of any personal space the mood around “Occupy Portland Base Camp” is high with a ton of energy throughout the place. The thing I wonder is how long will this last and will the city of Portland continue to let people stay here…time will tell.

Over 5000 people Occupy Portland

On October the 6th 2011 over 5000 people marched through downtown Portland in the Occupy Portland movement protesting the bank bailouts, record high unemployment and corporate greed. Portland is just one of many cities holding such demonstrations across the globe which started in New York City with the Occupy Wall Street demonstration.

The phrase “We are the 99 Percent” was heard throughout the demonstration referring to people that have lost or are afraid they will lose everything they’ve worked for while the “1 Percent” are getting wealthier.

The diversity of people at the demonstration was truly amazing. As you can see from the photos the “99%” does not have an age or color, it’s just all kinds of people frustrated with the status quo and ready for a change.

72 Jumping Horses and 2 Chariots

I was at Jantzen Beach this morning and ended up taking a tiny detour over to snap a few photos of the carousel there. The carousel, which has 72 jumping horses and 2 chariots, was built in 1921 by the C.W. Parker Amusement Company from Leavenworth, Kansas.

After being in storage for three years in Long Beach, California it was crated and shipped up to Jantzen Beach Amusement Park in Portland, Oregon where it operated from 1928 to 1970. In 1972 after a two-year renovation the carousel was returned to service at the new Jantzen Beach Shopping Center which is located on the grounds formerly occupied by the park.

Jantzen Beach Shopping Center may not be the most popular place to shop in Portland but it’s the only one with an incredibly beautiful piece of history that you can ride.

Participating in the 2011 Worldwide Photo Walk

This past weekend I participated in the 4th Annual Worldwide Photo Walk with over 28,000 other photographers. For those of you not familiar with this event basically you search for a walk near you, sign up for it and then show up ready to take some pictures & have fun. The event is open to all photographers from hobbyist to seasoned professional. The idea is to get together in a public place, walk around and shoot photos for a couple of hours…that’s it. Oh yeah, one last thing. It’s FREE!

Portland had three different events scheduled for Saturday October the 1st. I took the “distillery walk”. This was a rare opportunity to shoot inside three of Portland’s micro distilleries, Deco Distilling, New Deal Distilling and House Spirits Distillery. All of the distilleries are within 9 blocks of each other and we had about two and a half hours to shoot inside them. None of them could accommodate 35+ photographers at one time so we split up into three groups and headed out. In order not to overwhelm the small distilleries each of the groups would head to a different distillery and take photos for a half an hour then move on to the next stop, but if you liked one particular location you could stay there as long as you wanted.

This was the first time I’ve participated in the Worldwide Photo Walk event and it won’t be my last. I met some really nice people and had the opportunity to take photographs in three super cool places. What more can I say, it was a great experience and I’m glad I decided to join in.

The Woodpecker

Driving on highway 20 in Northern California you’ll find the small town of Nice. This is where I met John Hathaway, the quiet proprietor of his shop The Woodpecker. His shop, inside and out, is full of hand made one-of-a kind bat and bird houses as well as other interesting items. Each house John produces is truly unique and the variety of shapes, sizes, colors and materials used to create each piece seemed endless and playful. While chatting with John he told me that his shop was featured in the upcoming Francis Ford Coppola movie TWIXT staring Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern and Ben Chaplin. His face lit up and he seemed genuinely a little excited to get to talk about his interesting experience with the film.

After spending some time looking around and talking with John I asked if I could take his picture along with a few shots of the houses and his shop. John gave me a smile and so I snapped away.

If you find yourself on highway 20 near Clear Lake stop by and checkout John’s place at 3527 E Highway 20, Upper Lake, CA 95485. It’s worth a stop and you might find yourself making friends with the quiet creative man in the corner or bringing home a bat house.

When you walk around downtown Portland you should always assume you’re going to see the unexpected and unexplained, that’s one of the great things about exploring downtown.

I’m not sure what this guy was doing just holding up a magazine on the corner of 6^th and Morrison but it makes for a fun photo.

This little guy (a tad over four feet long) had a bit of an attitude and I wanted to capture it before moving on. He’s a Nile Monitor lizard and typically can be found living along the riverbanks throughout Africa feeding on fish, snails, eggs or anything else it wants.

Did you know? Nile monitors eat crocodile eggs. Crocodiles eat Nile monitors.

Sunset over the Columbia River

I was overwhelmed by the vivid colors in the sky and the reflections on the Columbia River as I crossed over the Interstate Bridge heading back to Portland. Unfortunately I couldn’t stop in the middle of I-5 to get the photo I wanted so it would have to wait. The following day I drove to Hayden Island, parked and walked over the bridge to capture this image.

The Creepy Gasco Building

Like a lot of people that have driven down Highway 30 I’ve wanted to know more about the abandoned gray building off the west bank of the Willamette River. Today I stopped to see if I could get a closer look, to take some photos, and maybe get inside. After 20 minutes of talking with the security guard I realized my winning smile and boyish charm were not going to get me in this building.

I did find out a few things about the place. It was built in 1913 by the Portland Gas & Coke Co. (‘Gasco’ for short). It has been unoccupied for over four decades. NW Natural has no plans for the building and since 9/11 you can’t take photos anywhere near the fence…however they won’t say anything to you if you’re on public land.

Hiking in the Ape Cave

We found ourselves three miles away from the Ape Cave lava tube in Gifford Pinchot National Forest just south of Mount St. Helens and decided to take a quick detour to check it out. Since this was not a planned hike we didn’t have headlamps or flashlights with us (yes we had camera gear but I don’t think that’s going to help us see in the pitch black). Not a problem, lantern rentals are available at Apes’ headquarters for under $6.

While walking around downtown Portland I met Jordan hanging out on the streets playing his banjo for money. After listening to him sing a song about not ever wanting to go back to Texas I asked if I could take a couple photos. He said yes and continued to play. We ended up talking about what he was doing in Portland and his destination, Maine. “Trying to get back there for berry picking season” is what he told me “that’s only 3500 miles away from here”. We chatted for a few more minutes, then I dropped a couple of bucks in his case and continued on.

Shooting a reflective surface

Shooting a reflective surface can be a little tricky because you need to set your lights and camera up in such a way that they will not reflect in the object you are shooting.

For this photo I ended up using three lights, one over and a little behind the sunglasses with a blue gel, one hairlight behind and off to the right of the sunglasses with a yellow gel, and finally a fill light off to the left with an octobox in front. The camera was positioned in front of the sunglasses facing up with a 100mm Macro 2.8 lens.

Lightroom was used for the white balance, Photoshop for removing the string holding the glasses and any other flaws in the image. To add a little more contrast to the glasses I used NIKs Color Efex Pros “Contrast Only” and then masked out the background. Finally I sharpened the frames of the glasses a little bit using a High Pass filter in Overlay blending mode and added some vignette in Lightroom.

For this shot I used a Canon 5DMKII, 100mm f/2.8 Macro, 1/60 @ f/8, ISO 100

Visiting Red Rock Canyon

If you find that you need a break from the insanity of the Las Vegas strip and you have a car, take a short drive to Red Rock Canyon, Nevada. It is located about 20 miles west of the Las Vegas strip and worth a visit. Although I found the first couple of trails to be a little more crowded than I would have liked it was beautiful and so much better than hanging out in some smoke filled casino. If you want a place that has fewer people continue down the road a couple of miles and you’ll be rewarded with some amazing views of the landscape, mountain ranges and time to enjoy them. There are tons of things to do and see here but if you’re not into hiking, biking or rock-climbing, just take the 13 mile drive through the park, it’s a refreshing break from the madness of the city.

Capturing a splash

I’ve seen some product photos lately with splashing water and I decided I wanted to try to duplicate the splash effect. The first challenge (and one of the hardest) was finding a clear water tank that wasn’t too expensive. I didn’t want to spend a ton of cash on something I may never use again. I ended up finding an inexpensive tank at a pet shop for only $12.99. The tank I purchased however had a black plastic frame around the top and I thought it would interfere with the photo so that had to go. I removed the frame and all of the glue and was ready for the fun to begin.

The camera was setup on a tripod in manual mode with a shutter speed of 1/8000 sec and f/stop between f/8.0 – f/14. With my remote in one hand and a cup of water in the other I started pouring water over the items and shooting. Below are some of the results.

Old Burned House

I spotted this burned out house in the middle of a field. The bright blue sky and beautiful wispy clouds overhead made for a wonderful backdrop. I knew if I didn’t capture the moment it would eat away at me for the next 100 miles.

Don’t know the story about what happened here or how long ago the fire took place but it made for a nice photo.

One thing you don’t expect to see when you’re driving down the road is the fuselage of a plane, right? I was driving on Route 66 somewhere between Las Vegas and Flagstaff when I passed a scrap metal yard and just had to turn around and go back to take a couple photos. When I got there I realized that I couldn’t get the perspective I wanted because of all of the trailers and fence in the way, so I hopped on top of the car for the shot.

Clouds over Dexter Lake

While heading back to Portland on Oregon Route 58 all of the amazing clouds and vibrant colors reflecting off Dexter Lake really caught my attention and I wanted to capture this moment. Creating a custom look

I wanted to take some photographs to give out to friends and family but wanted something a little different, something fun, not your ordinary couple portraits. So after setting up the lights in the studio I set the camera up to take a sequence of shots (if you ever need to do this I would highly recommend getting Canon’s TC-80N3 Timer remote, compatible with most of the EOS bodies).

After taking the photos I wanted to create a “custom look” to make them appear as if they were vintage photos, like something taken in the 50’s. So after a quick review in Lightroom to see which photos I wanted to keep I dove into Photoshop. Accomplishing the look I wanted ended up being a little bit more complicated than I originally thought it would be. After about an hour or so of experimenting I came up with a formula I was happy with. It would involve Photoshop and NIK Software Color Efex Pro & Sharpener Pro.

1.     Check background make sure it was clean
2.     Run the image through Sharpener Pro
3.     Set the new sharper layer to opacity of 50%
4.     Run the image through Color Efex Pro > Cross Processing @ 71%, T01
5.     Then Color Efex Pro > Paper Toner @ 88%, #5
6.     Set the new paper toner layer to opacity of 50%
7.     One more time, Color Efex Pro > Tonal Contrast 10%, 10%, 10%, 10%
8.     Flatten and save

Don’t leave your Speedlite at home

I almost always have a camera with me when I leave the house or studio but deciding what to take some days can be a tad challenging, will I need a 70-200 lens today? It only weighs 3lbs. Not a problem if you’re in a car but on a Vespa it’s a completely different story.

So the question I asked today was will I need my PocketWizards and Speedlite? I’m so glad I tossed them in my bag at the last minute because I came across this unexpected surprise and couldn’t have taken these photos with out them (and it only weighs a quarter of a pound).

A cold day on the Steel Bridge

It’s one of those beautiful but really cold days here in Portland, it’s too nice to stay in and it’s to cold to truly enjoy being outside but I decided that I needed to get out and shoot before the rain returned, so I headed downtown. Portland has a lot of bridges and they make for some fun places to take pictures. One of the coolest bridges is the Steel Bridge. It’s a double lift bridge that crosses the Willamette River. The lower deck is used by the railroad and has a walkway for bicycle & pedestrian traffic and the upper deck is for automobiles and the light rail system (MAX). I just happened to be crossing the bridge when a train was passing through…here are a couple photos.

Shooting stock photos

I try to take a couple photos a week to sell on stock photography sites like iStockphoto or Shutterstock. It’s not always the most glamorous work but people need photos for their website and brochures. The problem you run into with any of these stock photography sites is that you cannot have any brand marks, logos, etc. on the product you are photographing so you need to find things that either don’t have any branding or be prepared to do a little editing in Photoshop…here’s a few photos from this weeks shoot.

The old neon sign “Forest Park Burgers, freshly frozen Soft Cream” is just off Germantown Road outside of Portland. I have no idea when this place closed but the building has been vacate for as long as I have been traveling Germantown Road (over 16 years). They just don’t make signs like this any longer…very cool.

Heading back to Portland from Seattle I decided to take a little detour and visit the The Museum of Flight located at Boeing Field (just south of Seattle). I didn’t have time to visit inside the museum but I did walk around outside and checkout some of the airplanes made over the years (this was way better than setting in traffic).

Hot Air Balloons over Kansas

We had a chance to checkout the first annual Overland Park Great Midwest Balloon Fest while in Kansas this past weekend. Hundreds of people showed up to watch the event. The previous day we had some crazy thunder storms with some amazing but very dangerous lightning. But on this day the weather cooperated…we couldn’t have asked for a nicer evening.

Kansas City’s WWI Museum

If you make it to Kansas City, Missouri you should take the time to checkout the National World War I Museum and Liberty Memorial tower in downtown Kansas City. I didn’t make it over to the Museum until 4:00 in the afternoon and they close at 4:30. I knew I would need more than a half an hour to view the entire museum so after checking out the lobby and some of the displays I decided to walk around and take some photos of the Liberty Memorial tower…on my next trip I will make it a point to get there earlier.

Another great thing about the museum is that they allow cameras inside (with or without a flash), just no tripods.

Orange skies over Portland

As we walked around The Pearl District in downtown Portland I noticed the old water tower frame on top of one of the buildings so I stopped got out my camera and snapped off a couple shots. One thing I find really interesting is that when I’m out shooting is that people stop and ask “what are you taking a picture of?” or “why are you taking of picture of that?”, I smile and show them. One time I was asked “if I was a Private Investigator?”…ah no, I just like the way the lighting is here…

Finding the small details

I love finding small details and patterns in things to take photos of. Here’s a photo of one of the joints underneath the Fremont Bridge. I found the bolt pattern amazing, the rust added just the right amount of texture and depth…

This was all put together using Photomatix Pro, Adobe Photoshop CS5, and NIK Color Efex Pro.

Panoramic from under the Fremont Bridge

Summer’s coming to a end here in Portland Oregon and we wanted to make sure we took advantage of the great weather. So we pulled our scooters out of the garage, packed up the gear and headed out. We ended up under the south side of the Fremont Bridge (I405) right on the waterfront. What a great view of the clouds, blue skies, and the bridge. Time to start taking photos.

For this panoramic photo I ended up taking a total of 30 pictures that I planned on putting together with Photomatix Pro and Adobe Photoshop CS5. After loading them into Adobe Lightroom 3 I ran them through Photomatix Pro ending up with 10 photos. Then into Photoshop to merge all 10 of the HRD photos created in Photomatix Pro, a little clean-up, and done. I think the results came out pretty nice.

The Fremont Bridge is a steel tied arch bridge over the Willamette River located in Portland, Oregon. It carries Interstate 405 and US 30 traffic between downtown and North Portland where it intersects with I-5. It has the longest main span of any bridge in Oregon and is the second longest tied arch bridge in the world.

The bridge has two decks carrying vehicular traffic, each with four lanes. The upper deck is signed westbound on US 30 and southbound on I-405. The lower deck is signed eastbound on US 30 and northbound on I-405.

Sunrise at Haleakala (“House of the sun”)

Getting up at 3:30 in the morning to make the 2 hour drive to the top of Mount Haleakala in Maui is something most people talk about doing but very few actually do. It’s a long drive, it’s very cold and it’s windy at the summit… The truth is this is my third time on the island and every time I’ve said the same thing, “I’m going to watch the sunrise at Haleakala”. This time I made it happen.

The weather at the summit area of the park is greatly influenced by the high altitude. Cool temperatures, intense solar radiation, and rapidly moving clouds are characteristic. On average. The temperature drops about 3°F for 1,000 foot rise in elevation, making the 10,023 foot summit of Haleakala about 30°F cooler than the coast. Year-round summit temperatures range between below freezing to highs of 50°-65°F. The outside temperatures can feel much colder because of wind chill ad damp, overcast conditions.

Making a splash

Today’s project was to capture the splash right after an object was dropped into a wine glass. Timing on this was going to be very tricky so I planned on using a Canon’s TC-80N3 remote controller attached to a Canon 40D to trigger the camera. The lens used a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS set to manual focus, focal length 135mm, with the camera at ISO of 100. Two White Lightning x1600 lights, one with a large Octabox right behind and above the camera and the another directly above the glass (about four feet). Both lights have a PocketWizard wireless triggering unit on them that works perfectly with the MiniTT1 by PocketWizard also (attached to the camera).

A black backdrop was setup and then a couple test shots later we’re ready to get started…I took a total of 20 photos with one hand on the remote and the other dropping a small object into the glass. After working the timing out I finally started to get what I was looking for, here are some of the results.

My goal today was to take a couple photos of some wrecked cars so I got on my scooter and off to Economy Auto Parts in NE Portland. I ride past this place about once a week but today I’m going to stop and ask if it’s okay to walk around and take some photos. Sounds easy enough right? Believe it or not it was that easy. I had a quick conversation with the owner, he didn’t ask me many questions just told me to be careful and off I went…

The card game

I’ve seen this type of thing done a number of times but have never taken the time to do a multi-photo composite of myself. We get so tied up in working on projects for clients that we forget to take the time to have a little fun and work on some of our own things. After all, the reason we got into this business is that it’s fun. Well today I had a little time on my hands and thought, why not try it?

To start out, I found a deck of cards and some poker-chips I’ve had lying around for years and I setup the table (made sure I could get to every seat without moving things). Next, light setup…one fill light with a softbox and one Canon Speedlite 580EX II with a Gary Fong diffuser on it. Done. Then I did a couple test shots to check the lights, focus, and composition.

Now lets have some fun…the making of “The card game” photo.

Step one: The first shot was in the chair furthest away from the camera. Using Canon’s TC-80N3 timer and remote controller I set the timer to start in 15 seconds and bracket three shots. I would do this same setup for the next three shots as well.

Step two: Without moving anything around the table I walked over hit the remote and moved to the next chair, put on my poker-face and waited…(notice the Ace in my pocket…just a fun little detail I wanted to add)

Step three: In this photo I wanted to show my hand to the camera (but not block the entire scene). I picked up the cards, practiced my pose, quick test shot, checked results, hit the remote once more, waited and done.

Step four: Moving on to the last position at the table. Fired off three shots and done, almost. My dog Brutus decided he wanted to check out what I was doing so he joined me for this one. After checking the images on my camera I didn’t see any problems with him being in the shot (I could edit it out in Photoshop).

Step five: Here I planned on adding some of the small details to the final image that would make it more believable. I set the camera remote up to take 10 photos with a 3 second break between them. This would give me time to toss a card out and hopefully if the timing was right catch it mid flight.

Step six: Putting it all together and compositing the images. I started out going into Adobe Bridge, highlighted all the images I want to use and opened them into one Photoshop file with each image in a layer (Tools > Photoshop > Load Files into Photoshop Layers…). The reason you want to do it this way is that all your images will be aligned perfectly and centered in the Photoshop file (a big time saver).

Step seven: I rearranged the layers and started masking out the background (and Brutus). A little clean-up, some color corrections, then checked the masks. Then I used Nik Software Color Efex Pro™ to play with the contrast a little, made a copy of the final layer and converted it to grey (and set it to Multiply, Opacity 25%) so I could add some depth to the image. Done.

So what did I learn? That it’s good when you take a little time to play…the entire project only took about two hours.

In the middle of nowhere

This past weekend we loaded up our scooters with a change of clothing and some camera gear for a trip down to Eugene, about 150 miles south of Portland. The plan was to take only back roads and see what we’d come across. In the middle of nowhere I spotted these train engines parked so I pulled over to get a couple photos before moving on.

I’ve taken quite a number of photos of trains in the past but this was the first time I could walk around one without someone yelling at me. It was alsovery tempting to start climbing on it to get a couple other photos from the top side, but I didn’t.

One of the other things we noticed was an unusual telephone booth made of concrete surrounded by some old tires. I guess these phones allow conductors to call into the dispatcher or something…this one was not in operating condition.

Is film dead?

I was getting ready to set up some lights today for a shoot and while looking for a strap found a dozen or so rolls of film in the pocket of one of my bags. So I started to think with the speed, high mega-pixels and all the other features on the new digital SLR cameras out, are the days of shooting with film over?

I still have a film SLR but haven’t picked it up in years and have no plans to…I love having the ability to check my images on the fly, make an adjustment and take the next shot. So yes, for me the days of shooting with film are over…now why can’t I let go of my film SLR?

Seattles Backstreets

The backstreets of any city can be very interesting to photograph, they are full of colors, textures, and objects that you would never thing about placing together in a studio (or want to touch). They are so alive.

And sometimes they can also make you really thankful for the things you have. Shortly after I started talking pictures of this alley in Seattle a homeless man walked past me right up to the dumpsters and found what I’m guessing would be his dinner that night. He placed a couple items in his plastic bag, peeled a banana and moved on down to the next set of dumpsters.

Downtown Seattle

Walking around downtown Seattle with all your camera gear can be quite insane with all the people, the traffic, and yes the rain. But today it was relatively quiet. So I seized the moment and setup my tripod on the corner and start taking pictures. The image above is made up of 18 photos total merged together using both Adobe Photoshop and Photomatix’s Photomatix Pro 3.0.

I thought that the Nitelite neon sign just looked cool and had to take a picture of it. I would love to go back later in the day and get this shoot with the sign all lit-up, but not on this trip maybe next time…

It to was also processed using Photomatix’s Photomatix Pro 3.0 to make it a HDR image.

Old Chevy truck for sale

Experimenting with smoke and light

Here’s something I always wanted to try but could never find time to do, capture the motion of some smoke. We’ve had a pretty raining spring here in Portland, Oregon which makes for not so nice shooting. After being stuck in the studio for the past four or five days working on a clients website I needed a break. What to do? I found some incense that was been laying around put up a black backdrop and started shooting, playing ISO speed and aperture I started seeing some improvements. I only spent an hour taking pictures and the next couple in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop playing with colors. It was the break I needed.

Mad Cows on Sauvie Island

I went out for a ride on my Vespa one very nice day and ended up at Sturgeon Lake on Sauvie Island. I noticed a group of cows just hanging out so I walked over to take a couple photos. As you can see #767 wasn’t that happy about it…or he knew his days where numbered and was going to end-up as someones dinner.

Here’s a picture of Sturgeon Lake right up the road from the cows… It’s just beautiful place to watch all the The Great Blue Heron, Hawks, and Eagles fly around.

Welder working at PDX

Today I was out riding around Portland looking for some things to take pictures of, I ended up at PDX (Portland International Airport) and noticed the Welder above working away on the new parking garage.

I took the two photos below from the top level of the existing parking garage…I had the entire place to myself, it was great. As a bonus when you ride a motorcycle or scooter to the airport, parking is free!

Red Light District

Okay what would a trip to Amsterdam be without a stop at the famous Red Light District (or a look…that’s what I meant, a look).

Yes prostitution is legal in Amsterdam but only in a certain area of the city. The working ladies rent small rooms for the night, get all dressed up (in some sexy lingerie) and setup shop for the evening…I’m sure there’s a little more to it than that. From what I understand prostitutes are not required to undergo any type of regular health checks, but brothel owners and room operators often require health certificates before employing or renting rooms to them.

“No Photos” stickers are everywhere…I did get bumped and my camera went off and snapped the picture to the left. No really, it was an accident. But I had to keep the picture.

Easter Shopping

I was amazed at the number of people out shopping on Easter Sunday. I thought that most of the shops would be closed and people would be home with their families, I was wrong. It was just as busy on Sunday as it was on Saturday or any other day…Amsterdam is much like New York, it appears to never rest. Gotta’ love it!

Visiting Schmidmühlen

I’m lucky enough that I get to go back to Germany once a year to visit friends and family. Today’s trip was to Schmidmühlen to visit my Oma (grandmother). Schmidmühlen is a small village about 90km southeast of Nürnberg, it’s celebrating it’s 1000 year anniversary this year. This place hasn’t changed much over the years, I remember the Ludwig Sir building from when I was a kid…it looked just like it does in these photos. Sadly this may be the last year it will be left standing, the town is thinking of tearing it down to make room for something new…I guess everything must change at some point.

Walhalla the German Hall of Fame

We took a day trip to go see Walhalla (German Hall of Fame) that honors famous personalities in German history (politicians, artists, and scientists to name a few*). This place was constructed by Crown Prince Ludwig in 1830 and finished in 1842.

Below are a few more photos of Walhalla. The first one is a close up of a statue inside the temple, the second one is some of the columns that surround the place. The last photo is the giant front door which has to be 30 feet tall.

*The only true requirement for being considered for inclusion is some connection to the German-speaking world. Thus German speakers from other nationalities are included as are Germans who had made their contributions to society in non-German-speaking communities.

Church of Our Lady, Nürnberg

Nürnberg has to be one of my most favorite city in the world to visit, I never get tired of seeing it. I remember visiting the Christkindlesmarkt (Christmas Market) when I was a kid and thinking that this is just an amazing place. As an adult when I go back I notice the same things but I understand why I liked them so much as a child. The fact that someone built all this by hand without modern equipment hundreds of years ago. And the people of the city maintain it, it’s simply astonishing.

The Church of Our Lady, in downtown Nürnberg was built between 1352 and 1362, it’s a beautiful place to visit.

Just remember they don’t really like you using your flash inside but that should go without saying, right?

I think most photographers/artists prefer to be behind the scenes and not the main focus of the work. I’m no different, but I’m going in front of the camera today to see what I get…

I tried out a couple different lighting setups, turned the camera on, hit the remote and here’s the outcome.

I still prefer to be behind the camera but it wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be.

Portland bridges

Portland has some of the oldest and most beautiful bridges in the country. The photo above is of the Hawthorne bridge which spans the Willamette River here in Portland. It’s the oldest vertical lift bridge in operation in the United States.

The first two photos below are of the Hawthorne bridge, I was waiting for it to lift so I could get a shot of it. If you look closely in the second photo you we notice the barge coming up the river…

The third photo is from underneath the Morrison Bridge.

When I was out about town I noticed how beautiful the evening skies are so I pulled over to take a couple photos of it. I quickly noticed this excavator parked with the sunset behind it.

I ended up taking a set of bracketed shots to make an HDR (High Dynamic Range) photo using Photomatix’s Photomatix Pro 3.0 and Adobe Photoshop.

Surfboard fence on Maui

One of the coolest things to see when you’re on Maui is the world’s largest surfboard fence in Pe’ahi (how many surfboard fences can their be?). Hundreds of old surfboards surround the property…if you’re on the road to Hana turn on to Kaupakalua Road for a quick look.

Crater Lake National Park in Oregon

I’ve lived in Portland Oregon for about 16 years now and have never made it down to Crater Lake in southern Oregon. Until now. What an amazing place, it’s so beautiful and peaceful.

We spent four days here camping, hiking, and taking photos. The panorama of Crater Lake (above) was taken in the early morning and is made up of seven photos merged together in Adobe Photoshop.

This is a photo (far left) from the top of Wizard Island looking at one of the many dead trees surrounding the top of the cinder cone. Wizard Island, is a cinder cone that rises 764 feet (233 meters) above the lake and is surrounded by black volcanic lava blocks. The hike to the top took about an hour and a half with all my camera gear but the view was breathtaking and worth all the pain. After 30 minutes of taking photos it was time to head back down to meet the boat (you don’t want to miss one of only two boats that stop at Wizard Island to pick people up).

I won’t wait 16 years to go back…

Train engines in Kansas City

I was on my way to the Kansas City airport to catch a flight back home to Portland today (sick as a dog I might add). As we made our why to the airport I was checking out all the train engines lined up below, I asked Jake if he would mind pulling over for a minute so I could take a couple photos.

I noticed some of the engineers seating around on their break so I walked over with camera and tripod in-hand and asked if it would be okay if I got a little closer and took some photos. I’m guessing this was the first time this had happened because they all looked at each other like I’d asked if I could take the thing for a spin…after about 30 seconds or so one of the guys stepped up and said “the company wouldn’t like it but go ahead…and don’t touch anything”. 10 minutes later we’re back in the car and on our way…thanks guys.

The ride home

After attending Amerivespa in San Jose a couple of us got on our Vespa’s and started heading north back to Portland, about 1000 miles away. We decided to take not the Freeways so it’s north on Highway 101 to State Route 1 (often called Highway 1) then 96 and finally the last 300 miles in I-5…two and a half days later we’re all back in Portland safe & sound.

If you ever get a chance to make the ride I would highly recommend it!
